When you apply for an Australian student visa, the Department of Home Affairs assesses whether you are a 'genuine temporary entrant' — meaning you genuinely intend to study and then return home (or transition to another lawful visa). This assessment looks at your personal circumstances, ties to your home country, and study plan.

Financial Requirements

You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees, living costs, and return travel. As a rough guide, the Australian Government's requirement is approximately AUD $21,041 per year for living costs (this figure is updated periodically — confirm the current requirement with your migration agent). This is in addition to your course fees.

For Pacific Island families, this is often the most challenging requirement. Starting to save early — through a structured plan like the YESS Fund — makes an enormous difference. Banks statements showing consistent savings over time are viewed more favourably than a lump sum appearing shortly before application.

Health and Character Requirements

All student visa applicants must meet Australian health and character requirements. Health is typically assessed through a medical examination with an approved panel physician. Character requirements generally involve providing a police clearance certificate from your home country.

These are standard requirements, and the vast majority of applicants meet them without issue. The important thing is to allow enough time and to work with a registered agent who can anticipate and address any issues before they become problems.
